GPS REMOVER

Remove Location From a Photo

WipePic removes the GPS location from your photos in your browser. Add a photo, download the clean copy, and the coordinates, altitude and place names are gone. Your photo never leaves your device.

Why a photo can show where you were

Most phones and cameras write the GPS position into the file when you take a photo. The position is precise enough to point at a house. Social networks often remove it when you post, but email, cloud links, chat apps and marketplaces can pass the file on with the location intact. The metadata guide explains what else a photo carries.

What WipePic removes for location

WipePic reads the metadata of each photo and removes these location fields:

  • GPS coordinates and details: latitude, longitude, altitude, GPS time and date, direction, speed, GPS accuracy and map datum (the EXIF GPS block).
  • GPS in XMP: the same GPS fields when an editor or app stored them in the XMP metadata.
  • Place names: location, city, state or province, country and country code, from XMP and IPTC.
  • Thumbnails and extra images: an embedded thumbnail can show the photo without the edits that you made, and its own metadata can hold a location.
  • Captions that name a place: descriptions, comments and keywords stored in EXIF, XMP and IPTC.

WipePic also removes the rest of the metadata, such as the camera details, the dates and the author. It keeps only the rotation, the colour profile and, where the file has them, transparency, animation and the HDR data that the image needs to display. After cleaning, WipePic checks the new file, and it does not save the file if the check finds anything left.

Cleaned files get a random name (for example image-a1b2c3d4.jpg), so the file name cannot give the place away either.

What stays

  • What the image shows. WipePic does not edit pixels, so a visible street sign or landmark stays.
  • Copies that exist elsewhere. Metadata is removed from the file that you clean. Copies that you already sent or posted keep their own data.
  • Data stored outside the file. If an app, a cloud service or a platform has already saved the location of the photo on its own servers, WipePic cannot change that.

How to remove the location

  1. Add your photos to the tool above, or drop them on it.
  2. Check the list of fields that WipePic found, including the position.
  3. Download the cleaned photos. Share these copies, and keep the originals if you want the location for yourself.

To stop your phone from saving the location in the first place, see the guides for iPhone and Android.

Questions

Does WipePic remove the location of a photo for free?

Yes. WipePic is free, with no account and no usage quota. The only limits are technical: 300 files per batch and 50 MB per file.

Is my photo uploaded to remove the location?

No. WipePic runs in your browser, so the photo is read and cleaned on your device. It is never sent to a server.

Does it remove the location of every photo format?

It removes GPS data from JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, DNG, GIF and TIFF files. For each of them, WipePic keeps only the image data and the settings that you need to see the photo correctly, such as the rotation and the colour profile.

Will my photo look different after I remove the location?

No. WipePic does not decode or re-compress the image, so every pixel stays as it was. It keeps the rotation and the colour profile, so the photo still shows the right way up with the right colours.

Can someone still tell where the photo was taken?

Yes, if the picture itself shows the place: a street sign, a house number, a landmark. WipePic removes data stored in the file, not what is visible in the image. A caption that you wrote in a post, or a copy of the original that you already shared, can also show the place.
