How to Remove Location and EXIF Data From Android Photos

Last updated · 4 min read

Quick answer

To stop new photos from saving the location, turn off Save location or Location tags in the Camera settings. On a Samsung phone, turn on Remove location data when you share. To remove all metadata from a photo, use WipePic in Chrome.

What an Android photo contains

Each Android photo contains hidden data (metadata). This data can show the GPS location, the date and time, and the phone model.

The names of the menus are different on each phone and each app version. Look for the words in bold.

Method 1: Stop the Camera from saving the location

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Open the camera Settings ().
  3. Turn off Save location. On Samsung phones, the name is Location tags.

New photos then have no location. Photos that you took before this change still have their location.

Method 2: Remove the location when you share from Samsung Gallery

  1. Open the photo in Gallery and tap Share.
  2. At the top of the Share menu, turn on Remove location data.
  3. Select the app or contact.

This removes the location only. The date and the phone model stay in the file.

Method 3: Remove all metadata with WipePic

  1. Open WipePic in Chrome.
  2. Tap Browse Files and select the photos.
  3. Make sure that Remove Metadata is selected.
  4. Download the clean photos.

WipePic removes the location, the date, the camera details and other metadata. The photos stay on your phone. WipePic does not send them to a server.

WipePic reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, TIFF and DNG files. Most Android cameras save photos as JPEG files.
