How to convert HEIC to WebP

  1. Add your HEIC photos. Drop them on the box above, or pick them from your device. You can add up to 300 files in one batch, each up to 50 MB.
  2. Check that the Format is set to WebP and set the Quality if you want. WipePic has already chosen WebP for you on this page.
  3. Download the WebP files. One file is saved as it is, and several files are saved as a ZIP.

Why convert HEIC to WebP?

You have HEIC photos and want small files for a website or an app. WebP is smaller than JPG at the same look and works in all current browsers.

What to know about this conversion

  • WebP supports a Quality slider and transparency. WipePic encodes the file with your browser, so the formats on offer depend on the browser. If your browser cannot encode WebP, the tool keeps the original format.
  • Chrome, Edge and Firefox cannot open HEIC. WipePic loads a HEIC decoder (libheif) into your browser the first time you add a HEIC photo.
  • The Quality slider goes from low to high and starts at 85. A higher value keeps more detail and makes a larger file.
  • The converted photo is turned upright using its Orientation tag, and the new file has the extension .webp.
  • When the colors of a photo cannot be kept in the new file, WipePic converts them to sRGB and shows a note on the file.

Your photos stay on your device

The conversion runs in your browser. WipePic does not upload your photos, does not need an account and has no usage quota. Each converted file is also cleaned of its hidden metadata, so you can share it right away.

Questions

Why convert HEIC to WebP and not to JPG?

WebP files are often smaller than JPG files at a similar look. They are a good choice for websites. If you must send the photo to someone with older software, JPG is the safer format.

Does the converted WebP keep the iPhone location?

No. The location, the camera model and the other metadata of the HEIC photo are removed. The WebP file is cleaned again after the conversion.

Is the conversion lossy?

WebP from WipePic is lossy, so the pixels change slightly. The Quality slider starts at 85.

Does the HEIC to WebP conversion remove metadata?

Yes. WipePic removes the hidden metadata, such as the GPS location, the camera model and the capture time, and then converts the picture. The new WebP file is cleaned once more, so it carries none of it.
